On 5 June 2026, the day of death of Carl Maria von Weber is the 200th anniversary of the times. Although he is often labeled as the "inventor of the German National Opera"--fueled by the gigantic success of Freischütz and the later takeover by Richard Wagner--he was in fact a cosmopolitan cosmopolitan. He avoided nationalist thinking, mastered multiple languages (French, Italian, English and Czech) and was musically inspired by a wide range of cultures, including Spain, Asia and the Middle East. Weber's path was rocky: he suffered from an innate hip deformity and a father who wanted to market him convulsively as "new Mozart." Despite this difficult start and his early reputation as a "imagined Bengel", he developed into a highly disciplined professional through hard school at Abbé Vogler and through years of practical experience as a theatre director in Wroclaw, Prague and Dresden. A decisive factor in his success was the collaboration with clarinetist Heinrich Joseph Baermann. Weber's understanding of the clarinet's technical possibilities resulted in famous concerts that paved the way for his opera triumphs. His masterpiece Der Freischütz became a cultural phenomenon and is still admired today for the visionary "wolf gorge scene" and the balance between romantic nature idyll and demonic forces.
Weber's career was marked by the combination of passion and discipline. He coped with enormous professional pressure amid personal crises, including legal and financial hardships in Stuttgart, the long-won marriage to Caroline Brandt, and a lifelong fight against tuberculosis. He died at the age of only 39 in London, shortly after the successful premiere of his last opera Oberon.
